Mick Green - Guitar Legend On tour and in the recording studio, Bryan has always made a point of surrounding himself with formidable backing talent. Its doubtful however that any previous line up can match the concerted firepower of Chris Spedding and Mick Green on lead guitars. As well as working with other leading acts including Paul McCartney and Van Morrison, Mick Green still finds time to undertake the odd live date with The Pirates, a band he first joined as a teenager in 1962. The Pirates were the backing band for authentic rocker Johnny Kidd who had a UK No 1 smash with the classic, self-penned, Shakin All Over. For visual reasons, Kidd preferred the symmetry of a three-piece line up on stage and necessitated that Mick evolve and perfect his trademark style of playing lead and rhythm guitar simultaneously. After contributing telling performances on a number of Kidds hits including the top 4 Ill Never Get Over You, Micks next port of call was Billy J Kramers Dakotas followed by stints with a number of UK acts such as Cliff Bennett. Kidd was tragically killed in a car crash in 1966 but ten years later Mick and his fellow Pirates Johnny Spence (bass/vocals) and Frank Farley (drums) got together for old times sake and to their total amazement, almost overnight, became the hottest live band in the UK with their brand of high energy r&b being totally in tune with the rawness of the punk era. Two albums with Warners followed - Out Of Their Skulls and Skull Wars , but translating the high octane stage presence onto record proved elusive and the band decided to go out at the top in 1984. That may have been the end of the story until the band were tempted to put their collective toes in the water for what was billed as a nostalgic one off last blast in September 1999. Worried that no one would remember them after 16 years of inaction, Pirate fans again came out in their droves with a number of sell out gigs, a successful tour of Japan and even an appearance on TOTP2 with Mick switching roles from Ferry Band chic to Pirates blood and thunder on the same day!
